Update: Cultivating Responsibility

Every semester, I revise my kids’ weekly to-do lists. I slide the sheets into a plastic sleeve for them to check off with a wet erase marker. Twice a day, I say, “Show me your lists!”

Since 2017, we have successfully instilled a habit of responsibility in our home. Read how we got started here: Six Months Instilling Responsibility. And in 2021, we started using check lists. Read about how I implemented these here: More about Cultivating Responsibility.

The purpose of this post is to show you our updated checklists:

His “animal check” is for our chickens and rabbits in the barn. We had pigs and will have them again soon.
Over time, they have learned to manage their time well so that they have plenty of treasured free time.
I know, piano practice once a week seems a bit silly. Since we cannot take lessons this spring, we have decided that a little is better than none.
I admit that I do not manage my 5-year-old’s list as well as the others. She has formed the habit of completing certain chores pegged to certain times of her day.

You can open these lists as editable documents here and make them your own.

Check out the series Six Months Cultivating Habits, Skills and Joys in Your Children for how I formed our family culture around: Nature, Reading Aloud, Imaginative Play, Solitude, Responsibility, Cooking, Drawing and Family Bible Study.
