Barnyard Book

Charlottes Web

Since our toddler follows our improvised bedtime stories so well, I was curious to see how he’d receive a chapter book. A barnyard book like Charlotte’s Web fit September well. So we plunged one chapter a day with warm milk and pillows into E.B. White’s beautiful descriptions of seasons, country-living, and farm animals. Linus knew every character well and immediately wanted them added to our bedtime story caste. As expected, he did not follow the full plot like a 3rd grader, so we are not rushing to the next “big book”.

When we turned to THE END page, my three-year-old looked up at me confused, “What happened?” I explained that the book was over; there’s no more story. He stared puzzled at the blank sheet and repeated, “What happened?” I love these moments of discovery.

Speaking of discovery, we took an early morning walk to look for “Charlotte” in dewy spider webs (there were many) and spent an afternoon at a perfect local farm. Wilbur was not there and thankfully Templeton wasn’t either, but there was much to see and learn!

Goats, sheep, a donkey, horses, tractors, mums and corn.  And we picked pumpkins, apples, and the last of this year’s blueberries, raspberries.

Charlotte’s Web was well-accompanied by:
