“They shall build up the ancient ruins; They shall raise up the former devastations.
They shall repair the ruined cities, the devastations of many generations.”
Isaiah 61:4
.
We are cities under siege. We defend our walls with fatigued and frantic sword strokes, swiping at everything that passes through, including God.
But is there anything else in the world like this? We conquer by being conquered.
Let Him infiltrate the walls. Call up into the ramparts, “Take the arrows off the strings. Sheathe swords and lay all shields aside.” Let Him in! Let Him in! Bring Him through to the very keep.
Who is this God, this servant king? Gentle and slow and patient and kind. Take the crown from off your head and put it on His—a series of surrenders.
Raise a toast in the banquet hall. Merry songs round the table.
Take counsel by the fireside. Quiet chats in the inner chamber.
Sit together on the stoop. Washing the feet of passersby.
A city on a hill.
